Although most companies have small amounts of part time or
temporary
workers, they don’t really have a strategy. There is
no single answer or one
size fits all solution for everyone so some analysis is typically
required.
The right balance between full time, part time and temporary
worker depend on
factors such as large swings in customer demand, high seniority
issues that
effect vacation levels, vacation taken during specific periods
each year, and
lesser skilled job requirements in some areas even though
full time employees
are highly paid and highly skilled. Swings in customer demand
can create
unhealthy environments for employees when overtime is at a
high level for a
sustained period of time. Temporary workers can help relieve
the pressure of
this work, but if the skill levels are too high any gains
can be offset by large
amounts of time and money spent on training.
